On getting out of a comfort zone

"Getting out of my comfort zone was one of the best things I've ever done."

I swear this is something I thought I would never say in my life.

I am an introvert and as an introvert, I don't exactly enjoy getting out of my small cosy comfort zone. You know, that corner of my life full of routines and same people every day.

Actually, to be honest with you, I (used to) hate being out of my comfort zone – it makes me anxious, nervous and sweaty.

But last week something inside of me changed. Something I can't describe but it definitely made me feel good about myself.  As if I conquer a small scared part of myself.

It all happened when I was about to go to some kind of meeting on climate changes. There should be a movie projection and also some interviews with experts. I really wanted to go there but everything inside of me told me that I should not go – too many people, you'll be alone, they will stare at you, what if you will have to talk to someone…

In short, the meeting was amazing, movies were enlightening and the only talk I had was when I asked about the toilet.

This was a day I conquered my comfort zone and I enjoyed it so much. I felt like never before.

Through our life we create comfort zones which protect us. But sometimes we need to step out of this comfort zone to experience something new and exciting. I share three ways how I got out of my comfort zone.

In the sense of comfort

Growing outside of the ideal world in which we know every person, recognize every scent, have a routine... Who would want to live outside of it?

On the other hand, you should know better, that the best things always happened outside of our small cosy world. After all, you know what they say: great things never came from comfort zones.

Finding the ideal zone of growth

So, as you may see, the best way is the middle way. Most of us think that getting out of comfort zones means do crazy stuff like parachuting, bungee jumping, diving with sharks and others.

But it is not only about this. Getting out of comfort is a very subjective and it depends on each of us experiences. For me, it's about doing things which I'm personally scared of but for you, it can be nothing.

As Andy Molinsky said in an interview for Forbes: "The first steps, I believe, should be small and doable. Instead of jumping right into speaking at an industry event, sign up for a public speaking class. Instead of speaking up in the boardroom, start by speaking up in smaller meetings with peers to see how it feels. You may stumble, but that’s OK."

How I got out of my comfort zone

Actually, it was not easy. I fell so many times that I can't even remember. But after all, I had to say to myself stop.

I listened to my heart

It's like a verse from the poem, I know, but I have always listened to my brain and this was a reason why I never got out of my comfort.

Back then, before the meeting, I almost listened to those thoughts that told me not to go because blah blah blah. But for once, I decided to do what my heart wanted. And it worthed it.

Do what YOU want even if it doesn't feel right (for your brain) because your heart will thank you.

I let it just happen

I remember how overwhelmed and anxious I felt when I see other people getting out of their comfort zones – doing crazy stuff and enjoying their life. And so I thought there is something wrong with me that I didn't experience this amazing life.

The truth was, I wanted to live an adventurous life so much that I didn't notice my body and my mind refused to do anything at all. They just stuck.

Since then, I let these all-getting-out-of-comfort-zone things just happen and I feel much better.

and I took baby steps

I don't dive with sharks but sometimes I take a different way from the school. I don't talk to a big group of people but sometimes I can have a small talk with my neighbour. And this is a good start, don't you think?

There is one thing I want you to take from reading this post:

Do not think your life will be amazing ONLY if you get out of your comfort zone (you're enough even in your comfort zone). BUT do not waste your life spending the whole time in your comfy zone.

What was the first trip out of your comfort zone? Let me know.
